There are three tenancy deposit schemes:
- Tenancy Deposit Scheme, an insurance-backed scheme.
- Mydeposits, an insurance-backed scheme.
- Deposit Protection Service, a custodial scheme.
If your landlord does not protect your deposit under one of these schemes, they could be liable to pay back three times the cost of the deposit.
Read more on the GOV.UK website about tenancy deposit protection.
A court may decide that you won’t have to leave the property when the tenancy ends if your landlord hasn’t used a tenancy deposit scheme when they should have.
