Libraries Week 2019

The focus of this year’s Libraries Week is a celebration of the role libraries play in the digital world and the ways in which they are helping to engage people through technology, in building digital skills and supporting people’s health wellbeing and education.

Events due to take place include a series of digital skills masterclasses offering a helping hand for those looking to boost their computer and online skills. From getting started on social media, to online shopping, and all you need to know about storing your digital photos.

There will also be a chance to discover the wealth of digital resources already on offer to residents through Barnet’s libraries, including an extensive range of e-books and e-audio books, as well as use of the Pressreader app which gives library card holders free online access to thousands of newspapers and magazines.

The digital theme continues throughout October as part of the library service’s Year of Learning.

On 19 October children aged 8+ will have the chance to take part in a free Micro:bits Workshop at Edgware Library (2.30-3.30pm). The workshop will give children the opportunity to learn some simple coding and to borrow ‘micro:bits’ from the library to devise their own digital creations at home. No booking needed.

Chipping Barnet Library and Church End Library will offer children aged 5+ an imaginative mix of craft, coding and robotics on 21 and 25 October. £5.50, no booking required. Full details available online.

On 22 and 23 October Chipping Barnet Library will host a two-day animation workshop for children aged 8+ combining paper, charcoal and smart phone. Booking required.

Councillor Reuben Thompstone, Chairman of the Community Leadership and Libraries Committee, said: “There’s a fantastic array of events on offer during October and I would encourage residents to take a look and get involved. Barnet Libraries also have a tremendous variety of digital resources available all year round, including free access to e-books, audio books and thousands of digital versions of newspapers and magazines from around the world – all at the touch of a button.”
