A series of new parking initiatives aimed at boosting local trade are to be trialled in Edgware town centre.
As part of the council’s on-going review of town centre parking, the council is to trial a number of measures in Edgware town centre from Monday 11 February including reduced charges.
It follows extensive consultation with local traders and the Edgware Business Forum.
The trial, which will run for a minimum of six months, will allow the council, businesses, their customers and residents a chance to monitor and comment on the effectiveness of the changes.
This will allow the council to gauge the success of the measures and whether they should be made permanent.
The changes will include:
- A 35 per cent reduction in charges for on-street, short stay pay by phone parking bays in Edgwarebury Lane, Hale Lane, High Street (Edgware Road), Manor Park Crescent, Penhurst Gardens, Station Road and The Drive.
Previous Short Stay Tariff (1.5hr Max);
Up to 30 mins: £1.00
Up to 1 hour: £2.00
Up to 1.5 hours: £3.00
New Short Stay Tariff (1.5hr Max);
Up to 15 mins: £0.35
Up to 30 mins: £0.65
Up to 1 hour: £1.30
Up to 1.5 hours: £1.95
- The introduction of a new 15 minute tariff on existing short stay pay by phone bays.
- The conversion of a section of double yellow lines outside the Royal Mail sorting office in Old Rectory Gardens to a free 20 minute maximum stay, no return within three hours parking bay. This will operate from Monday to Saturday 8am to 8pm for people wishing to pick up parcels. The 20 minute rule will apply to blue badge holders.
- A three-hour maximum stay for blue badge holders within existing on-street pay by phone bays to ensure a regular turnover of spaces.
Councillor Dean Cohen, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “I’m pleased to say we are due to trial a new structure of parking charges for parts of Edgware town centre which include reduced charges.
“This is part of our ongoing review of parking in the borough’s town centres which began in North Finchley.
“As I have said before I don’t think a one size fits all approach to pricing necessarily works and that’s why we will be trialling these changes.
“This is intended to provide a welcome boost to the area and encourage residents to make the most of what their high street has to offer.”
