Barnet's Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy 2017 to 2020
The strategic objectives are to:
- Prevent Violence against Women and Girls
- Improve outcomes for victims and their children
- Hold perpetrators to account
- Develop joint working practices between agencies
The strategy covers the following forms of VAWG:
- sexual violence, abuse and exploitation
- sexual harassment and bullying
- stalking
- trafficking and forced prostitution
- domestic violence and abuse
- coercive and controlling behaviour
- female genital mutilation (FGM)
- forced marriage
- crime committed in the name of ‘Honour’.
Barnet Council’s Community Safety Team are working closely with our partners across the borough including Police, Barnet NHS, Community Rehabilitation Company, Fire Brigade, National Probation Service, voluntary and community groups to tackle domestic violence and abuse and improve support to victims of these crimes.
Through our zero-tolerance approach, we are holding perpetrators to account and continue to fund our perpetrator programme to support behaviour change.
We continue to fund support Services which include: Domestic Abuse Advocacy Service, Perpetrator programme, high risk Domestic Violence and Abuse panel, Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conference (MARAC), GP training -Identification and Referral to Improve Safety(IRIS) and women's refuges in the borough
Domestic abuse: help and support
Advocacy and 1 to 1 support service: Barnet Solace Advocacy and Support Service
If you are a victim/survivor of domestic violence and abuse and would like one to one support and advice you can contact Barnet Solace Advocacy and Support Service. With an allocated Advisor, they will provide practical and emotional support, crises intervention and risk management support. Barnet Solace Advocacy and Support Service team can also make referrals to specialist services such as counselling, legal services, benefits and housing services and group programmes for you and your children.

Domestic violence and abuse one stop shop
You can drop into the One Stop Shop which takes place weekly at Barnet House every Thursday 9.30am to 12.30pm, no appointment is needed.
At the One Stop Shop you will receive one to- one support from an Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA) from Barnet Solace Women’s Aid, Victim Support, Jewish Women’s Aid or Asian Women Resource Centre. They will also discuss safety options and complete a risk assessment with you.

- Family Law Solicitors or an Immigration Solicitor
- an experienced former Magistrate
- a Barnet Homes’ Housing Advisor who can go through any housing options that may be available to you
- a Sanctuary Coordinator who can advise you on extra security measures that can be adapted to your home
- an Anti-Social Behaviour Officer, if you are a social housing tenant with Barnet Homes
- Cyber Care UK, if you are experiencing cyber/online abuse.

Refuge provision for women and girls
A safe space for women fleeing domestic and sexual violence where they and their children can stay with experienced and specialist staff who provide individual support.

Support for vulnerable adults

Perpetrator programme
RISE Mutual offer a range of Domestic Abuse Services including group programmes for male perpetrators, female perpetrators and those in the LGBT+ community.
In addition, RISE also run preventative and trauma informed programmes with young people and offer a robust support service for women and victims.
