Library services for five to eleven year olds

All the books and CDs you have borrowed have been extended for six weeks and all fines removed. Any fines due on DVDs from this time will be waived when they are returned.

While libraries are closed you can borrow ebooks and eAudiobooks for children of all ages. If you don't have a library card join online and start borrowing straight away.

Take part in our craft activities and story time at home, in our video events programme for children. You can also join in our arts and crafts activities for all ages. Find out about our weekly online events programme or follow us on Twitter and Facebook to find out the latest news.

Need help with your homework? Email with your questions and we'll recommend some good resources to help.

We understand that children and parents will be looking for activities and learning opportunities while children are at home. Barnet Libraries have put together some websites to help. We are working on plans for more online library services so please check here regularly for more information.

Empathy Day 9 June 2020

Empathy is being able to imagine and share someone else’s feelings.

Empathy Day focuses on how we can use books to step into someone else’s shoes. Scientists say that we can train our brain with stories – the more you empathise with characters, the more you understand other people’s feelings.

On 9 June, EmpathyLab will host an Empathy Day of exciting and creative online events and home-based celebrations to help children read, connect and act using empathy. Authors, illustrators, schools, libraries and families across the country will all be taking part.

Leading children’s authors such as, Children’s Laureate Cressida Cowell, Noughts and Crosses author Malorie Blackman, and award-winning illustrator Rob Biddulph are amongst the names to spearhead the exciting Empathy Day programme.

This year, EmpathyLab will be launching their first ever online Family Activities Pack for families to download. The collection consists of 14 activities to do together at home as part of their Countdown Fortnight to Empathy Day.

The pack is full of great ideas to get children writing, drawing, crafting, listening and reading, all whilst developing essential empathy skills. All they need is a pen and paper!
