The Mayor of Barnet

Councillor Tony Vourou has become the 60th Mayor of Barnet, after being officially sworn in during the Annual Council Meeting held on Tuesday 21 May at Hendon Town Hall.

Councillor Vourou takes over from the borough’s previous Mayor, Councillor Nagus Narenthira.

The Mayoress will be his wife, Mrs Caroline Vourou. Councillor Vourou has chosen Macmillan Cancer Support and Age UK Barnet as his charities, and to fundraise for cardiac equipment at Barnet General Hospital, during his Mayoral term.

The Deputy Mayor will be Councillor Danny Rich and his wife Laura Lassman will be the Deputy Mayoress.

The Worshipful the Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Tony Vourou, said:

“I am honoured to be appointed Mayor of Barnet. I have lived here for five decades, and I look forward to giving something back to the many diverse communities that call our borough home. I look forward to meeting the many people and organisations that make Barnet the great place that it is during my year as Mayor.

“I would also like to extend my thanks to Councillor Narenthira for all of her hard work as Mayor over the last year.”

Tony Vourou was born in Tottenham, north London, attending school in Tottenham and Wood Green, then North London Polytechnic for his HND in Business Studies. He moved to Barnet in 1973 and has lived here ever since. He and his wife Caroline have two children.

He was elected as a local councillor on 5 May 2022 and has served on the Children’s and Education Committee as well as on one of the Planning Committees.

His first career was in the garment manufacturing industry before becoming an event co-ordinator in the hospitality industry in 1999. Alongside his working life, Tony has been a school governor for the past 27 years in two of Barnet’s Junior schools, is involved in a number of local associations and is a member of the Greek Orthodox Church in Barnet. In his spare time, he enjoys travelling, reading and being involved in community events.
