Visually impaired

Barnet council's sensory team supports adults over the age of 18 living in the London Borough Barnet who are blind, have limited or impaired sight and deafblind (also known as dual sensory impairment). We assess your sensory impairments to provide special equipment, ensuring your independence and safety.

How we can help you

Our technical and rehabilitation workers will support you if you're severely sight impaired (blind), sight impaired (partially sighted) or deafblind (also known as dual sensory loss). They will offer information, advice and support if you're facing significant visual loss.

Our aim is to help you understand your sight condition and empower you and your family to maintain independence and overcome some of the difficulties you may be experiencing.

We'll arrange to visit you and carry out an assessment of your need, ensuring to accommodate any communication requirements you have.

After the assessment of your sensory needs, we may be able to provide you with the suitable equipment that will meet your needs or sign post you appropriate organisations that may be able to support you. For example: Information on services such as the Blue Badge scheme and other services you may benefit from.

We also work closely with local organisations who support people with sight loss and refer or signpost to services that may help you. Some of these local organisations are:
