Barnet will compete against London’s other boroughs for the ‘best float’ competition during the London New Year’s Day Parade (LNYDP) – and you are invited to watch!

The theme of this new year’s extravaganza is to showcase London’s boroughs to a global audience with an iconic theme past, present or in the future. The theme of Barnet’s float will be BarNET ZERO, reflecting Barnet’s ambition to become net zero as a council by 2030 and as a borough by 2042.

The Worshipful Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Nagus Narenthira, said: “We’ve brought together the diverse communities of the London Borough of Barnet to put together this magnificent float. They have come together to show the importance of us all working together to become net zero as a borough by 2042 and as a council by 2030. We can do this with your help, and we hope all the good people of our borough will help us make the planet a better place for everyone.”

“We are proud of our borough’s green spaces and keen to show these off through the flower and leaf decorations on our float made by Barnet students as well as live plants, to be replanted around the borough after the parade. Our float will also include musicians and dancers to entertain for the parade and showcase BarNET ZERO to the world!”

A panel of judges will be deciding the winners of the borough competition for a share of £40,000 in money to put towards Mayoral charities. You can watch the parade from 12 noon on Monday 1 January in person, on London Live, or via Facebook and Twitter @lnydp. The Parade annually reaches 400million TV broadcasts and streams and will be screened live in the UK and across the world on numerous streaming outlets.

A borough-wide effort is being put into making Barnet’s float be the best it can possibly be, with input from many different groups sharing their many different talents.

So far these include:

  • The Compton School
  • London Youth Concert Band
  • INCarnival
  • artsdepot
  • Lantern Recovery Service for the float vehicle
  • SW Bruce for scaffolding
