Barnet Council is set to support the United Nations’ 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, running from 25 November to 10 December, with a series of events across the borough.

These events, developed in collaboration with various partners, will engage residents in advocating for change and spearheading initiatives to combat violence against women and girls.

They support the council’s vision for Barnet to become a borough where everyone can live free from domestic abuse and violence.

Cllr Sara Conway, Barnet’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Participation, commented: "In Barnet, we are committed to taking action to tackle violence against women and girls. Early intervention and prevention of domestic abuse and violence against women and girls is a key priority for our Safer Communities Partnership Board.

“Through comprehensive strategies, significant investment in safety measures, and continued community engagement, we stand united in our fight against all forms of violence and abuse.

“As part of our pro-active approach, we will also be launching a trial of ‘Safe Havens' to provide a place for women and girls to seek support if they feel threatened or vulnerable, together with a training toolkit for local businesses."

In addition to the 16 Days of Activism, the council is gearing up to launch a 'Safe Havens' trial in December. This initiative aims to create safe spaces for women and girls during evening hours in public spaces. The ongoing development of this programme involves engaging local businesses to garner support and active participation.

This effort builds upon the pioneering pilot scheme 'Culturally Integrated Family Approach' (CIFA), launched in 2022 to tackle domestic abuse in the borough. The wide-reaching scheme offers tailored services that acknowledge cultural and ethnic differences to enhance support for those experiencing domestic abuse.

Moreover, the council has invested £2.3 million in upgrading and expanding its CCTV network. Alongside initiatives like the Public Space Protection Order as well as delivering regular pop-up community safety hubs and ward walks, this investment forms part of wider plans to create a safer environment for all residents.
