A grant scheme set to transform cold and energy inefficient households and cut domestic fuel bills, is to be offered for the first time to eligible residents, with low household incomes, living in Barnet

Barnet Council is supporting the West London Green Homes Grant: Local authority delivery (GHG:LAD), which will offer low-income householders up to £10,000 to pay for new insulation, low carbon heating systems, and smart heating controls. For low-income homeowners, this grant will cover 100 per cent of the costs of improvements, and landlords could claim a grant of up to £5,000 for two-thirds of the cost of energy efficiency improvements on behalf of their eligible tenants.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Dan Thomas, said: “I encourage any eligible household to apply for a grant to pay for improvements that will make homes warmer and more energy efficient. Not only will it make homes more comfortable, it will also make them cheaper to run by cutting energy bills.

“More energy efficient homes will also help our residents to reduce carbon emissions. As a council we are committed to making the borough net zero by 2050 at the latest. We all have our part to play and applying for a Green Homes Grant will be a great step forward.”

In December councillors approved Barnet Council’s targets to be carbon net zero as an organisation by 2030, and for Barnet as a place to be net zero as soon as possible after that and by 2050 at the latest.

This year, residents will have an opportunity to help shape the council’s Sustainability Strategy. The council is already undertaking a number of initiatives to cut carbon emissions, such as installing up to 500 on-street residential electric vehicle charge points by the end of 2022.
